Scotland are off to the World Cup! (Nope, not that one).

The much anticipated FIFA World Cup isn't the only sporting showpiece that Scotland will be involved in this year. This Saturday, another Scottish 11 take on the West Indies in their opening match of the T20 World Cup in India (that's cricket, by the way). Sadly, it looks like we have no chance of winning the thing. However, with two other associate nations (minnows) in our group, as well as a belter of a match up against England, there's still plenty to hope for.

It's been a crazy time of late for the Scottish team. Two weeks ago they were twiddling their thumbs, rueing a missed opportunity to be at a World Cup having failed to make it through qualification. Fast-forward to today, however, and at the drop of a hat an entire squad of players and coaching staff have descended upon the Indian subcontinent with nothing to lose. Thanks (I guess?) to the fallout between Bangladesh and the ICC, Scotland were called upon as last minute replacements. Have they only gone and answered that call.

So, what impact can the Scots make? Well, looking at the group we can say that things could definitely have been a lot worse. They slot into Group D which also contains England, the West Indies, Nepal and Italy. With the top two from each group progressing to the quarter finals, Scotland will likely need 3 wins from their 4 matches to reach the knockouts.

England

Annoyingly, a win against England seems an almighty stretch, albeit not impossible. In this form of cricket in particular, anything can happen. The pressure is off boys. Go for it.

West Indies

The West Indies will see themselves as 2nd seeds, and they should be beating every team bar England. However, we all know sport doesn't work in shoulds, and Scotland have nothing to fear against them. They are not the force they once were, and their recent form includes losing a 3-match series to group-mates Nepal in September. An upset is in the air.

Nepal

Scotland know all about Nepal. The two sides faced eachother four times in 2025, sharing the spoils with two wins apeice. On paper this matchup looks a cracker, and it's absolutely winnable.

Italy

Tournament debutants, and a match-up more akin to the Six Nations at this time of year. There's not much to know about this Italian team, other than the fact they knocked Scotland out in qualifying. You'd think this should be a reversal of that form, but take them lightly and they'll beat us again. Revenge would be sweet.

So, to be hopeful, or not?

Having said all that, winning three matches and progressing would be a seriously impressive feat given the lack of preparation the Scotland side have had. All the other sides in the group have been preparing for this tournament for months, and you'd think they'll be miles ahead in terms of fitness and match sharpness. Perhaps it's better to view the tournament as what it is - a free hit.

Effectively, whatever happens doesn't matter. Given that two weeks ago we weren't even in the tournament, some entertaining performances and a win on the board would be more than enough for those invested. Start with a win on Saturday, however, and maybe we can start dreaming.

No pressure lads - gee it laldy!
